About the Role
Gusto moves hundreds of billions of dollars per year. The Engineering leader will be part of the Payments team and will be responsible for a) leading a team for pay-ins and payouts to support money movement across US and International, and b) (re)architecting our payments platform to scale for the future. This role will be tasked with retaining, building, and leading a high performing and highly engaged engineering team. They will help the business scale through private and public phases of our company-building journey.
As the Head of Engineering on the Payments team, you’ll lead a team of 15+ engineers and managers, supporting them in their continued growth and success. You’ll collaborate with a talented cross-functional team of Product, Design, and Data partners, focusing on building payments experiences that delight customers.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop the engineering team across payins and payouts to help build the long term vision of the payments team at Gusto. The leader will expand our payment/funding methods across US and International while ensuring that our 300K+ businesses and millions of their employees are getting paid on time, every time.
- Lead, empower and coach a team across engineering for payments to i) drive technical guidance and consistent execution of the next generation of payments capabilities that enable Gusto to expand its product offerings; ii) recruit, hire, and onboard new engineering team members; iii) identify and address any roadblocks or challenges faced by the team; and iv) deliver scaled engineering solutions on time.
- Enable reliable, efficient, compliant and cost effective end-to-end payments and money movement.
- Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and excellence within the team. In addition, collaborate and communicate with senior management and stakeholders to develop and execute long-term strategies for Gusto’s engineering department.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with cross-functional teams, including product design, data science and growth teams to make tradeoffs that build customer trust.
- Provide and receive mentorship and peer support
Here’s what we're looking for:
- 12+ years of expertise in Payments platforms at scaled FinTech companies: Experience successfully leading payments teams at scaled Fintech companies. Has led the building of scalable and global payments platforms. In addition, this individual should have collaborated with payments partners across the industry (as part of implementation of their technical work or for influencing). Experience with payment regulations including money licensing requirements/leading organizations to achieve and maintain SOC2 compliance is a plus. Knowledge of payments unit economics and how they work is also a plus.

- Is execution focused: The leader has a track record of executing bold ideas (or old ideas that did not see fruition) by influencing leaders across the company and finding ways to unblock and execute them differently.
- Inspiring leader: This individual has the ability to inspire folks to build the next generation of platform services that power financial products. They have created highly engaged, representative, and high-performing teams. They can also inspire across Gusto leaders through verbal and communication skills.
- Possess high judgment: Leadership is about making decisions and tradeoffs. This individual has the ability to make tradeoffs based on first principles and can make difficult decisions that are right for their organization and company.
- Completed a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related discipline; higher education preferred

Our cash compensation amount for this role is targeted at $222,000 to $247,000 in Denver & most remote locations, and $261,000 to $290,000 in San Francisco and New York. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate experience and expertise and may vary from the amounts listed above.
