About the Role:
We are seeking a Product Counsel to join the growing Product Legal team to meet the expanding needs of our company and our customers. In this role, you will be advising and partnering with our business teams to enhance and scale Gusto’s growing suite of tech-based HR services for US employers hiring both domestically and globally. Gusto’s Legal & Compliance team partners with product teams to enable innovation, facilitate responsible company growth, accelerate the Gusto roadmap, and provide compliant products to our customers, through solution-focused counsel on legal and business risks. Here’s what you’ll do day-to-day:
- Counsel the product, engineering, and design teams on a range of issues including employment compliance, wage & hour, employee benefits, marketing, data privacy, and AI use.
- Research and advise on complex regulatory frameworks to design or enhance innovative and regulated B2B and B2C products and services that support the HR and compliance needs of small businesses.
- Contribute to our product suite from brainstorm and ideation through launch.
- Contribute to key initiatives helping to mature our Legal & Compliance team’s functions.
Here’s what we're looking for:
- JD degree and a member of a State bar/active license to practice law.
- 7+ years of combined legal experience, with experience working in an in-house legal department at a technology company. Experience must include employment law.
- Experience providing pragmatic legal guidance related to tech products.

- Experience creatively solving problems, taking into account legal risk and business needs.

Our cash compensation amount for this role is between $162,000 - $200,00/year in Denver, and between $191,000 - $237,000/year for New York/San Francisco. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate location, experience and expertise and may vary from the amounts listed above.
