Gusto Embedded Payroll (“GEP”) allows us to bring our people platform to thousands more businesses than those we serve directly and will play a key role in Gusto’s growth. Learn more here and here.
As a Developer Enablement Lead, your work will be foundational in building out Gusto’s developer experience. Your primary responsibility will be to own our public documentation and create clear, concise and accurate content. You will also be developing and managing technical tools to simplify and accelerate the developer experience, such as managing GEP’s Postman collection and implementing tooling to track/monitor developer questions and issues. This team is new and there will be other opportunities to engage with Gusto’s developer community and demonstrate our commitment to a world-class developer experience. As the first hire in this role, you’ll have the opportunity to set direction and build it out for the future.
What it is like to Work with Gusto
Here’s what you’ll do day-to-day:
- Evaluate the team’s existing external documentation to identify gaps, then design and execute on a gap remediation strategy.
- Develop user-friendly documentation, including API documentation, technical specifications, user guides, and knowledge base articles, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and coherence. This involves organizing and maintaining a centralized repository for all documentation, ensuring version control, accessibility, and ease of navigation.
- Continuously improve documentation processes, tools, and practices to streamline content creation, maintenance, and proper documentation hygiene (including but not limited to voice, tone, and nomenclature).
- Produce or use visual aids, such as flowcharts, diagrams, videos, and screenshots, to complement written documentation and enable GEP’s developers to build faster and more efficiently.
- Work closely with cross-functional teams, including solutions architects, engineers and product managers, to gather information and understand complex technical concepts for effective documentation and ensuring all features, enhancements, and changes are fully documented at launch. Our APIs are the building blocks for payroll - your job will be to provide the guides and complementary materials to educate our partner on how to use the endpoints we are adding/amending and build high-quality payroll products!
- Work with marketing & product marketing to develop content strategy and provide inputs for developer resources and content assets beyond the API docs (ex. webpage, blog, etc.) to drive awareness of new releases and educate developers.
- Participate in usability testing and provide feedback to enhance the user experience of our APIs, Flows, and other developer tools.
- Identify, implement, and maintain other Developer Enablement tools and resources, such as GEP’s Postman Library or internal tracking of developer questions and issues.
Here’s what we're looking for:
- 6+ years of total technical experience with 2+ of those years in Technical Writing and must have experience with REST APIs
- Ability to write clean, concise, and approachable content
- Superb communication and interpersonal skills - must be an excellent communicator with the ability to gather, evaluate, and distill complex, highly technical information into easily understandable content in user-friendly formats.
- A user-first approach to understanding what’s needed and the ability to deliver concrete, iterative deliverables quickly
- Excellent problem solver
- Skilled at pattern-matching with how engineers think and being curious about technical areas you haven’t encountered before
- Ability to work collaboratively and manage multiple deliverables within tight deadlines
- A perpetual learner and teacher
- Ability to read, understand, and build short code samples in a variety of programming languages is a plus
- Experience in building out additional enablement materials or activities for technical audiences is a strong plus (e.g. webinars, blogs, postman collections, video, or other)
